Small Group Questions

Pendulum Swings:
1. Which would be better … “being free from worry or always having joy?”
2. Which would be worse … “having no sense of humor or no common sense?”
3. Which occupation would be better … “movie critic or food critic?”
4. Which would be better … “being wise or being faithful?” (Proverbs 31:26)

1. READ TOGETHER:  John 13:34-35

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.  By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

2. READ:  Matthew 19:16-17

Jesus responds to the question about what is ‘good” by stating “only God is good.”  Discuss His response made by Him who embodied good.  In what ways does this statement by Jesus teach us about the sin of our own pride and arrogance?

3. READ:  Acts 12:21-23 (the record of Herod’s death)

In what ways does this teach us about the importance of realizing who God is?  Why is God so adamant about us giving Him the glory in everything?

4. READ:  1 Corinthians 14

Paul’s foundational theme to ‘follow the way of love’ (14:1) is stated often in this chapter by noting that when we meet together as a church, all we do should ‘edify’ or ‘strengthen’ or ‘build up’ the church.  Discuss some practical ways we can do this more often at Downtown when we assemble?

5. Discuss worship assemblies you have attended – whether at DC or elsewhere – where you truly felt “God among you” (1 Cor. 14:25).  What factors contributed to this ‘feeling?’ (i.e., was it the worship, the place, the people, etc.)

6. What are the times in your life, outside of Sunday ‘church’ times, when God’s presence was really ‘present’?  Why is it that God seems/seemed more real at these times than at other times?
